Yesterday we saw about 40 patients again- lots of sore throats, abdominal pain, diarrhea, migraine..etc. There were also patients for follow ups with diabetes, HTN, lab results, etc. We heard a lot of wheezing and saw some pretty red and dull tympanic membranes. Dr Parajón gave us a guideline book, and we looked up some of the MINSA protocols and abbreviations for lab exams, drug names, etc. They are listed above, and some are quite different that in Los Estados Unidos. There are also some pharmaceuticals that we are not familiar with- I posted one, and when I find the information on some of the others, I will post that. Evidently, Epocrates does not carry Nicaraguan or non-USA pharmaceuticals!
About today: Hola- It’s Caroline! Today Christiane and I took it upon ourselves, because the clinic is closed due to Semana Santa, to visit Granada. A mere bus ride from Managua, Granada was the first European settlement in mainland America (or so says Wikipedia). Since this isn’t really clinically related, I’ll be brief. We visited two churches, a chocolate museum, and Las Isletas. Our boat tour of Las Isletas was spectacular. These islands are located in Lake Nicaragua, and were created many years ago by the eruption of a volcano. Some are privately owned, and for sale if you’re looking. Others are owned and used for resorts or restaurants. One island is inhabited by friendly monkeys. One monkey came onto our boat and let us pet her, for treats of course. All-in-all it was well worth the $2 cramped bus ride.
